With a population of more than 100,000, San Angelo is one of the largest cities in the United States without an interstate running through it. The city is located near the geographical center of Texas.
San Angelo was founded in 1867 with the building of Fort Concho, designed to protect the frontier, and it was home to cavalry, infantry, and the Buffalo Soldiers. The Concho River runs through the middle of the city, offering a four-mile riverwalk that was recently named one of the Great Places in America.
